I have a 2008 Saturn astra with 35000 miles. all of a sudden the interior drivers door is inoperable. whether the door is locked or not, it will not open the door. It feels like the doors are locked. All other doors work fine. Is there some type of a sensor inside that door that may have gone bad?

As you are having problem with front door of your car, so what I would suggest is to consult with an expert as there must be any technical problem which you are not able to figure it out.
Another option is to replace that door with new or used one, whatever suits you the best. I too replaced doors of my Saturn with the used ones from autopartsfair. I got very attractive deal from them and that too with a year warranty.
