Generally cars this old and which have run so many miles do have problems with engines and transmissions. A major overhaul with parts replacement could get you along quite well. Sometimes it becomes quite cumbersome and expensive to repair the damages and a replacement saves time as well as money. You can go in for a used replacement for the transmission from places like automotix.net/usedtransmissions/1997-oldsmobile-cutlass-inventory.html which will cost you around $300 with warranty and free shipping.
