Toyota is recalling 2.5 million vehicles in the U.S. over a power window switch that could catch fire.
The company says the switch may have a “notchy” or “sticky” feel. If owners try to use a commercial lubricant to eliminate the condition, it could cause the assembly to melt, smoke or in the worst case, catch on fire. Model years 2007 to 2009 are affected but Toyota says is has received no injury claims due to the problem.
Toyota dealerships will fix the cars free of charge when the recall starts later this month. Technicians will inspect the switch, disassemble it and add a coat of special fluorine grease.
Concerned owners can call Toyota’s customer service line at (800) 331-4331 or go to safercar.gov for more information. The list of recalled cars includes:
• 2007 to 2008 Yaris (approx. 110,300)
• 2007 to 2009 RAV4 (approx. 336,400)
• 2007 to 2009 Tundra (approx. 337,100)
• 2007 to 2009 Camry (approx. 938,100)
• 2007 to 2009 Camry Hybrid (approx. 116,800)
• 2008 to 2009 Scion xD (approx. 34,400)
• 2008 to 2009 Scion xA (approx. 77,500)
• 2008 to 2009 Sequoia (approx. 38,500)
• 2008 Highlander (approx. 135,400)
• 2008 Highlander Hybrid (approx. 23,200)
• 2009 Corolla (approx. 270,900)
• 2009 Matrix (approx. 53,800)
