Oil in Plug Wells

Replacing plugs on a Montero Sport with a 6G7 series - 3.0 engine.
Plug tops and wire boots are soaked in oil.
How would oil be getting into the plug wells through the valve covers?
Any solutions for preventing further oil leaks into the plug wells
