Hi guys and gals,
I am a thirty-something dad (two boys under age 4 will be in the back a lot) who just got the greenlight from wifey to get a stickshift car (we've had this battle for like the last 10 years and she is finally giving up I think).
So we've discussed some SUV options (Xterra, FJ Cruiser) to the sporty little cars (Civic Si, WRX, Mazdaspeed3, GTi/GLi) and two "traditional" larger cars (Subaru Legacy, VW CC).
I know I am sort of across the board here with those cars, but there's very limited amount of cars available in stick nowadays. Our other car is a V8 4Runner, so the SUVs seem unlikely just b/c of the gas cost.
So from the list above (Civic Si, WRX, MS3, GLI, CC, Legacy) which do you think would be the best bet? No streetlight racing, no track days, but I grew up with a Mustang GT so still like the feeling of being pushed back in the seat from time to time. I guess ultimatly it comes down which of these is the most livable day-to-day while having some b@lls. Prioritzation for me would be 1. Drivability 2. Reliability 3. Engine/speed 4. Safety 5. Resale. No modding for me. Leaning towards WRX b/c of traction/speed/power even though it is butt ugly.
What would you guys/gals recommend?

Thanks in advance as always!

Legacy 2.5 GT! Like a WRX, but with legroom in back. I really like the 2010 Legacy.

Won't push you back in the seat, but, the Subaru Legacy is really an impressive car to drive.  I was very surprised.

You can't go wrong with the VW GTI MK6.  The shifter is the sweetest 6 speed I've ever driven.  The power is smooth and immediate.  The suspension tuning is excellent, and you get 30+ mph.  You can get it with four doors, so the kids can climb into the booster seats with minimal involvement on your part.

I really like the German cars.
i had a 2001 GTI VR6 and it was sweet.
i have a 2007 BMW Z4 coupe now and if you wanna
spend extra bucks for a bimmer, in many ways its worth it.
Our family also have had mazdas so i like them too.
-1st choice; BMW base model 3 series (323i doesn't cost too much with fewer options) or 2nd choice; VW GTI 4dr or third choice mazdaspeed 3.

The Mazda may be the fastest and the cheapest.
The VW is a very well balanced car.
The BMW is really good quality and a bit of snob appeal.
Take your pick.

All are 4 doors for the family which should be practical, fun and self-shifting.
have fun will zoom zoom.
