My son has a 2007 dodge charger.  He noticed the engine was starting to sound like a diesel truck.  He checked his oil level and there was oil on the stick just after shutting off the engine, but after it settled, it was very low.  He opened the oil lid on the valve cover and noticed oil was in there instead of the oil pan.  It has 13,000 miles on it and we replaced the oil with synthetic oil about 3,000 miles ago.  What would cause this?

some oil should be in the head but not to much, it is likely to be a simple case of a leaky oil line. that sound may also have to do with loose intake piping or intake manifold (no biggie, 2mins with wrench to fix). but here is the kicker this could also indicate a blown head gasket (ouch). chrysler vehicles of late have had terrible reliability. the worst option is that there is the possibility that the timing belt has slipped some and the combustion cycle is off by a few degrees and the valves could be impacting or close, if this is the case the engine will sound dreadful and soon be ruined if not looked at immediately (very very rare, and very very noticeable (LOUD)).  that kind of stuff only happens if your son "races between the lights".  the diesel clattery sound could be the spark plugs firing when the pistons aren't fully extended (misfire). in all likely hood though the oil was just low and when they checked your air filter at the last oil change the man forgot to tighten it back down.

hope this helps Smile
