Ok, so I'm an old coot who has subscribed to Automobile mag since issue #1. Maybe that's why I notice these things:
First, Automobile gets acquired by Source Interlink which also owns Motor Trend.
Then, I start getting all kinds of marketing crap trying to entice me into subscribing to Motor Trend and I'm thinking, "don't tell me Automobile is going to sink to MT's level".
Now, I receive the Jan. '09 Automobile and see the Nissan GT-R on the cover is their pick for Automobile of the Year.
THEN, I see a Motor Trend and they picked the GT-R as Car of the Year. Coincidence? I wonder.
Maybe I'll have to go back to Car and Driver if I want to read truly independent reportage.

Thanks for the post...
While it's true that Motor Trend and Automobile Magazine are both owned by Source Interlink, both operations run independently. We are located in Ann Arbor, MI and Motor Trend is in LA.
The votes were cast, the ballots tallied, the story was written, and the GT-R was photographed in Michigan well before we learned that Motor Trend also picked the Nissan.
A question for you, what should we have picked instead? I think our GT-R story clearly stated why the GT-R was the clear winner.
You want to go back to Car and Driver? They can't even pick the GT-R as a big yearly winner because it doesn't fit into their price rules.
