Why do variable valve timing systems need so many moving parts?

Most have a lot of things that could break.  I thought of a system 20 years ago that would use electro-magnets to move the valves.  No cams.  No camshafts.  No push rods.  No belts or chains.  Just some magnets.

Can the mechanical systems really be that much more reliable than a electric system?
