BMW's M1 Hommage brings up an interesting point: Now that everything from the Lamborghini Miura to the German Supercar That Nobody Loved has been stylistically redone in the modern idiom, what's left? What do you really want to see remade for the 21st century?
Yes, it's cheap and easy, and sure, it even smacks of profiteering. But some icons just shouldn't die. Here are a few of our favorites that we'd like to see back, even if only in cue form (like the M1) and not complete rehash (like the Mini or the VW New Beetle):
Alfa Romeo GTV
BMW 2002
BMW CS Coupe
Ford Capri
Ferrari Dino
Mercedes-Benz Gullwing
McLaren F1
...and you get the idea. Remember, it doesn't have to be a complete copy; an homage works. Whaddaya think?

Interesting Mr. Smith...
My thoughts:
Alfa GTV. Alfa for sure needs an affordable rear-drive sportscar. The GTV is one of my favorite cars of all time. I say a modern Alfa in the spirit of the GTV is the way to go. Modern Alfa models look good and are only an excellent chassis away from being wonderful.
BMW 2002. The 1-series tries the 2002 gig but it fails because it's to heavy. I still like the 1-series but it would be great to have something lighter and more basic. I'm afraid the business case is difficult, especially with the weak dollar and the fact that BMW has the Mini brand for the $20,000 car.
BMW CS Coupe. Like the 2002, I'd love to see a back to basic mid-size coupe. I don't see BMW going this way but who knows. We can dream.
Ford Capri. Love it, love it but we'll see what Ford thinks. Rumors say they may be working on a new sporty coupe. I'm not sure America will get it though.
Ferrari Dino. That's a tough one. Ferrari doesn't need to make cheaper cars as they sell everything they build. That said, I'd love a modern Dino but I don't see it happening.
Mercedes-Benz Gullwing. The McLaren SLR is not a car that excites me. I'd love them to make a proper driver's car to battle the likes of the Audi R8. Who knows, maybe this could be a modern Gullwing. The fabulous 6.2-liter V-8 sure would be wonderful in a sportscar.
McLaren F1. Is it too young of a car to think about a new version? I'm not sure. Either way, I believe the F1 shows us what supercars will be in the future. They won't be OTT like the Veyron, they'll be lighter and smaller.
What about a modern Fiero? Better yet, a modern Buick GNX? Looking at Buick now, it is so hard to even think they built that car!

Whatever it is, it has to strike the chord it hit for the 15 yr old turned 45.
I had an odd attraction to the R5 Turbo Renaults.
A friend had a little '58 250GT Ferrari that I'd like to see back - how about a tight, *little* Ferrari?
