2003 Honda Odyssey Transmission Problems

Thank you Becky for your comments.  We must continue to push and make people aware.  Honda clearly needs to acknowledge the issue and come up a real solution, not a band aid as in the first Class Action.

Fingers crossed, but I do believe Jared is the one who will be most effective.

Hi, I just found you all today, and I'm glad I did, because I'm about to go ninja.

I had the transmission replaced on my '03 Odyssey last February. At first Honda refused to pay anything, because I couldn't prove that I had had the transmission serviced at 30,000 miles. Eventually the dealership and Honda US picked up 40% of the cost of a rebuild, after I pitched a fit and pointed out all the problems I've had since I got the car in Nov. '02.

Now, on March 24th, the TCS and engine lights came on. I could not get it to the dealership until March 31st; however, I called the dealership to see if it would be safe to drive and they said yes. On the 31st, they said the EGR system needed to be serviced, that's why the engine light came on, and that the TCS light coming on was coincidental. So I paid $400 to have it fixed.....and I was half a block away when both lights came back on. I went back, and they said there was probably still solvent in the system, and that's why the lights came on. They reset the lights, and told me it would be fine. They came back on a week later. I took it back, and they couldn't find a problem. Indicators showed a misfire, but they said I could've gotten some "bad gas"; everything else checked out fine. They kept coming on and off. On Easter Sunday they came on again, and I took it to the dealership on Monday. They said "oh, we notice you didn't have your spark plugs and coils checked/replaced at 105,000 miles; that's probably the problem". They checked, they're fine. "Oh, then it must be the valves". Guess what? They're fine too. Now they've decided the fuel injectors need to be replaced, at a cost of about $950. How did they decide this? Because they took the fuel injectors of off their shop van, and put them on my van, and now there are no misfires.

I told them I want to be reimbursed for the $400 I spent on the EGR system, because they obviously didn't fix the problem with that repair. They have refused, saying there is no indication it wasn't the EGR system, even though I pointed out to them that the lights came right back on when I left. They were basically like "so what, that just indicates that there is a problem somewhere else". Then the guy calls me back, and says his service manager is willing to "work with me" on the cost of the repair, by dropping it down to $675. I asked how do I know that this will fix the problem, and he basically said it couldn't be anything else.

Now I read on this forum that darn near everyone else who has had this same problem with those 2 lights coming on, ended up needing their transmission replaced.

I am livid. I am a single parent, and this is my only vehicle. The cost of that repair is more than half of my monthly income. What do I need to do now?

Thanks!

we have been having several problems with our 2003 odyssey including the blinking drive light to it breaking down and they can never find the problem with the transmission i now know this is complete bs and would gladly have my name involved in the lawsuit. we bought honda for their apparant "superior quality" and have never been more disappointed. i feel like we got screwed and if there is a recall or under some lemon law i would like to know about it because this just can not keep happening!!!!!!!!

Hi All,

Go to OdysseyTransmission.com and add your information:

Odyssey Transmission

The website will keep running totals of all the reported cases.  Hopefully this will bring more attention to Honda.

Thanks,
Ronnie

Hi Mary, Penny, etc:

Have been researching this extensively and am also interested in pursuing legal action.

I bought my 2003 Odyssey used from an internet dealer who did not disclose to me that there was a recall issue...car had already been serviced per the recall. I would have purchased an extended warranty if I had known. Well, the transmission just went out with no warning at 92,000 mi. I had to have it towed 100 miles to the dealer for an inspection. After speaking with the SM and Honda Customer Service, the SM called today to tell me they would only pay for 10% of the "warranty price" (versus the "retail" price, which was a couple $1000 more). Bottom line is they want $4000 to rebuild the transmission. I got a telephone quote from another transmission specialist in the Denver area for somewhere between $2200 and $3200.

I am extremely dissappointed in Honda...paid more than I wanted to when I purchased the vehicle because I needed a reliable, dependable, quality vehicle. I got ripped!! Honda needs to be held accountable.

Thanks for all your posts and I will call this attorney tomorrow.

Hi Ronnie: I just posted my case at the link to the NHTSA website you provided the link to. I encourage everyone to do the same, as there were only a few cases posted. If anyone else has a consumer group or "watchdog" group in which to file complaints, please forward.

Hi Penny: I will call Jared tomorrow. What can potentially come out of this? i don't know if I should let my car hang out at the dealership indefinitely or get the tranny rebuild from another reputable transmission specialist. How should I contact the district manager?  When I asked the local SM, he referred me to Honda America customer service.

Oh, here's something amusing...I got the song and dance about how my car had 92,000 miles and was mainly "mountain-driven". What a joke...there are plenty of cars that are driven in the mountains here in Colorado without failed transmissions at 92,000 miles.

Sue,

Call Jared.  Also, contact American Honda Customer Service in Torrance, CA.  Which is also the Head Office of American Honda.  Document everything with them, no matter how minor it seems.  Be polite and firm with the District Manager, mention the hundreds of disappointed customers, ask why should we purchase another Honda??  Does Honda want to keep their North American Base of customers?  etc..Offer to pay zero, wait and when they offer to pay hopefully 50%, then you offer to cover the labour only (do so in writing).  Mountain driving has absolutely nothing to do with why the transmission failed, tell them it is their fault design and lack of quality.  Ask Honda are they marketing a vehicle in "bad faith," they target directly families due to their alleged safety and reliability, or is this fraud???

Let me know how things go.

This is a club I really didn't want to be a member of! I had no idea about Honda transmission issues until a week ago Friday when I was told I need a new trans. on my 01 Odyssey. 94K miles and 99 months old. Under the mileage/but out of extended warranty by 6 months. Honda has been horrible. THey've had my car a week and just Friday made me a offer to reduce the cost from $3200 to $2100. I respectfully but firmly said that wasn't acceptable. I bought a Honda and paid top dollar because I wanted stellar reliability. I didn't get it. The customer service has also been bad. I've documented every call. I've been lied to between the dealership and American Honda. I was told by Betty in CA that she got off in 10 minutes and I shouldn't have called her. I called because my dealership TOLD me too! She was so unprofessional. They even closed my case while my car was sitting at the dealership and it had to be reopened! They want to charge hundreds more for the engine mounts and I read here that the damage was probably caused by the faulty transmission. I am so disgusted with HOnda! It's been a real nightmare and is waring on my spirits.  I will call the lawfirm tomorrow!
Questions-
If I accept an offer from them, does that make me ineligible for the law suit?
Is there something else I need to do to  press them into a better offer?
Warn out in GA!

2003 Honda Odyssey we bought new. At about 95,000 mi starting having issues in the higher gears (up and down shift constantly at about 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45 MPH, sometimes accompanied by a loud grinding/mechanical noise. Took the car to to the dealer today and they told us it needs a new tranny at $4,500. We were told we had to contact Honda Corporate, and have a case number assigned. But the dealer is basically willing to do nothing at this point. He did say "at best they are only going to pay 50%", so Honda knows they have a problem. I guess I will be calling Mr. Stamell as well.

Honda sells these cars as the best in the business, says they are the best built cars, will run for 300K miles no problem, and then runs and hides.

Time to buy American.

I have a 2003 Odyssey with only 83,000 miles. We mostly drove this for long family travels but  we did'nt have any problem. We made sure that  maintenance is up to date. I Just noticed it last week that when shifting to next gear it shifts differently and it feels like it slips for seconds before it'll change to the next gear. I was scared to drive it on the freeway with the children. I took it to the dealership and gave me the estimated cost to have a new transmission at $ 3,500. Whew!!!  A lot of money!. I don't know what to do.
