I called Honda's corporate office and they said they needed an "authorized Honda Dealer" to check out the problem. So I made an appointment, but they couldn't look at it for 2 weeks. I dropped it off 1 1/2 weeks early to see if they could fit it in or if they got a cancellation. Two days later they had looked at it and had the results of the test. I stopped in to get the paperwork so I could call Honda corporate. The service manager told me the transmission was needed replaced. He also had a rep call Honda corporate and talk to them. Honda corporate agreed to pay 75% of the total cost, around $600. I then asked him when it would be done & I could pick up the van. Four working days later (today) I picked up my van. I have no problem paying 25% of the total cost for the amount of miles over the extended warranty I have on it.
I hope everyone else has as much luck as me.

I am in Canada, specifically, Oakville, Ontario. We now have lawyers for both sides of the border, Jared Stamell in NYC and Jim Poyner in Vancouver, BC.

My van is an 2002 and I bought it used. Yes, all service since the beginning has been done at the dealer, I even checked the previous owners service records.
Thx Penny

I've read through all of this and did not see anything about what happens when service is not done by Honda. Because Honda service of Passaic, NJ, did not respond to our phone calls for almost a week and we needed to have our car repaired, we went to Aamco (also knowing that we were out of warranty with Honda). Transmission replaced by Aamco at about 40K, broke down 3/4 yr. later, Aamco fixed again, and now broke down again at 87K. We plan to make an appointment with Honda this time as our warranty with Aamco is over.
How will this affect us in a (hopeful) class action suit?
Thank you.

I took my van to a transmission specialist also. I did not trust Honda. However, I must admit the transmission the specialist purchased came directly from Honda, so I expect sooner or later mine will go again. Hopefully, this Class Action will finally force Honda to acknowledge the design flaw and deal with it.
I would contact Jared Stamell in NYC and discuss it with him.
Thx Penny

The Honda service dealer in Passaic, NJ, was terrible. Does anyone know of a Honda service dealer in my area where they experienced good service? Thank you.
Penny, thank you for your answer. I plan to contact Jared today. I'll let you know when I reach him.

Well, I dropped the car off at a Honda service center finally. For $150, they said they'd see what they can do. Kindly asked them to see if they could possibly try to convince Honda to cover the bill, seeing as how it was $5k+, and since trying doesn't hurt. Asked them to take as long as they needed, but the more they would cover, the better. Took a day to get back to me, but (after some paper work) the good news is that they said they'd cover it 100% for the new trans. The bad news is that I'm out the $150 for the diagnostic. Since I'm well over warranty, it's a good enough deal. Lastly, I asked that they get some mechanics with a lotta experience to get the job done, and not someone new. The end result is that I'm gonna get my baby back this Monday. Hoping that it will last for many years to come.
BTW, best of luck on the case. The outcome will affect all of us, even those without problems as of yet.

Can someone please interpret the class action suit for the 1999-2001 Odysseys? Was there a recall, or did it just force Honda to replace trannys for free? Either way, weren't we just getting the same crap back with the replacements of the same bad transmissions? Thank you.

With reference to the 1999-2001 Class Action, NHTSB and Transport Canada ordered a recall. Honda agreed to replace the transmission if needed, had to meet certain requirements (specifically the colour of the fluid and the diagnostic code of PO740) or to add something called an "oil jet kit." Honda agreed to notify all affected via letter, however, I note this happened only in a limited capacity.
As for the Honda replacement transmissions, this is the very reason the 2nd and/or 3rd ones they put in fail. Honda has still not addressed the design flaw. All that has gone on is a move from 4 speed automatic to 5 speed automatic with the 2nd generation of vehicles.
As far as I can tell, Honda only partially fulfilled their agreement and I still believe that Honda knew they were acting in bad faith when they committed to the abovementioned. Honda is fully aware of the design flaw between the 2nd and 3rd gear ratios, as this where the burn out occurs. Perhaps they need some new design/mechanical engineers. The best is the rebuilt part, when they replace our transmissions with the same crap they rebuilt from the same garbage that continues to fail........
Hope this answers your questions.
Thx Penny

Thank you, Penny. So what happens if we sell our cars before the class action suit is settled?
