KELSO, Ore. - A man walked away from a two-car crash that split his Volkswagen in half Monday, police said.
According to the Oregon State Police, Hector Perez-Sanluis, 33, was waiting to turn from eastbound Highway 26 onto Kelso Road east of Sandy when the crash occurred about 7:15 a.m.
Police said Perez-Sanluis turned his 1997 Volkswagen Golf into the path of an oncoming Honda Accord, which crashed into the Volkswagen's passenger doors and split the vehicle in half.
Perez-Sanluis, of Portland, was able to crawl out of what was left of the Volkswagen on his own, police said.
The driver of the Honda, 19-year-old Aldo Menchaca Varela of Sandy, and Perez-Sanluis were both taken to Mt. Hood Medical Center, where they were treated for minor injuries and released.
Both were wearing seat belts.
Police cited Perez-Sanluis for making a dangerous left turn.

Every time I see a Smart Car around here (they have them at Budget Rent a Car) I wonder how they'll hold up in a collision? The good news is Mercedes engineers them and has always been well ahead of the pack when it comes to engineering safety. I still look at them though and feel safer on my motorcycle.
