http://ww.horsepower.lx.ro A study was conducted to determine the best engine for these new vehicles. V8, V6 and inline 6 configurantions were considered. At the conclusion of the study, the inline 6 was chosen as the best way to meet the needs of these new vehicles. Any engine configuration has certain advantages. In the case of an inline 6, the advantages are: - it is inherently balanced; - the design can be simple; - it has the lowest cost of the options considered; - the configuration has the best emission control capability; - it allows for manufacturing flexibility, so that more than one product can more easily be produced in high volume on the same manufacturing equipment; - it is the easiest to assemble. There are also challenges with an inline 6. These include engine lenght, crankshaft torsional vibration and powertrain bending.
NOISE AND VIBRATION One of the advantages of an inline 6 is its inherent balance, which means less noise and vibration in the vehicle. Actual vehicle measurements of mount vibrations transmitted to the vehicle has shown that an Inline 6 transmits less vibration into the vehicle than a 90 V6 with a balance shaft (3rd order) or a typical V8 (4th order). This is a clear advantage for an Inline 6 cylinder engine.

Inline six cylinder motors are space inefficient.
They require lots of underhood space to properly install in any vehicle.
