We drove the all-new, 500 horsepower Ford Shelby GT500 in the July issue of Automobile Magazine. Is it the new face of American horsepower or do the Dodge Viper SRT10 and Chevrolet Corvette Z06 still have more appeal? We the think the Z06 is still on top, now that the Ford GT is going out of production. But the GT500 is definitely among the greatest Mustangs ever made. There's nothing the Chevy can do about that.

I think so. The Viper and Corvette are the Amercian sports cars. I would put all three in my garage.( If I could afford it.)

The Corvette Z06 is on top in my mind. The Viper feels to big, and I'm a bit bored with the way it looks. Despite the fact that the GT500 has just about as much power as the Z06, it is no match for it at all, and all of the performance figures out there will back that claim up. Sure, it looks mean and I'd love to have one, but when the Z06 doesn't have carpets or trim pieces falling off of it, it is one scary fast car. The "blue devil" model coming soon frightens me to death. And it will probably do the same to a few others when it goes flying off the road in a massive oversteering spectacle. Maybe Car and Driver can crash test one just like the Ferrari 599.

This is a very mean car, but I'd still hand it to the Z06, even though it's in a different class. It has that nice sound system, but with a car with that big of engine, who wants to hear music when you can hear your car growl at road it's trampeling?

It's a hard decision calling this the best mustang, I favored the look prior to the retro styling, but this is pretty popular.

Unfortunately, I must disagree with you. While the body doesn't appeal to me, it does have its fame here in the US, aswell as accross the seas. While this get smothered by both the Viper and Corvette (I'm sorry, times in the quarter mile for this car are a little saddening). Reading the article, and seeing the 1/4 time, I can't say this is the meanest car. Both the 03 and 04 SVT's out-performed this car, aswell as the Mustang Roush Stage pulling high twelves.

Again, for its quarter mile, my GTO can, and has shattered those times, and it's bone stock(Cept K&N drop in filter). I've managed to run a 13.072 while another in my club, who still has the stock filter ran a 12.96.

Yes it looks nice, but I can spend 10k less on something already out doing it, throw a super charger on it, and buy new internals, and know I have something that would eat this alive.

But again I say, this is a great mustang, but doesn't deserve as much hype as it's getting. The Z06's are running faster than the Vipers at 11.5, so this low 13 shouldn't be ran, or compared to the 11's. Keep it in its class with the Evo's, STi's, GTO's, and a couple modded hondas.

I think Ford missed the boat.  I have an '03 SVT Mustang and this one doesn't do anything better than mine.  It is no faster straight line and without the IRS isn't near as agile or ride as well.  Oh well, most lunkers won't be able to blow the rear end with this.
