We've liked what we have seen in the new version of the Toyota FJ Cruiser. It's styling combines both soft and rugged attributes and it possesses genuine off-road capability. It's hard not to like a vehicle with the legacy, capability and price-point of the FJ. We haven't had it long enough to pass final judgement, but we've liked what we have seen so far.

What do you think of this vehicle? Owners especially, what has your experience been with this reincarnation of the classic off-roader? Does it do justice to its namesake, or is it something best appreciated in a new, more modern light?

I really like the new FJ.  It is a different car than the previous FJ's.  It's more Defender 90-ish, while the old ones were more Wrangler-ish.  I miss the open top (removable roof).  For this reason and some others, I am waiting for the 2nd or 3rd year of production.

I am waiting for the 4-door Wrangler to come to market.  When this happens, I will drive both and see which one I like better.  Without driving the new Wrangler yet, I have a feeling I will like the openness in the Jeep, but the engine and driving feedback of the FJ.  The REALLY long wheel base in the new Wrangler looks odd in photos.  I drove the FJ and was very impressed.  However, there were a few big items that held me back from buying one just yet.

I e-mailed Toyota and told them what I feel is really missing in this FJ (in hopes they can make these additions and perfect the current model).  I love the look and driving dynamics.  It is very comfortable to drive and has a lot of good features.  The biggest drawback for me is the rear door windows do not go down.  As an outdoor enthusiast and a dog owner, this is a MUST!  It needs power back windows in the 1/2 doors (for the dog) and a sunroof or two.  The back seat is a forgotten space in the current model. A sunroof and power back windows would definitely help this dark space.  Or removable roof sections would be good (like the new Wrangler 4-door).  Maybe two or three removable roof panels (multiple T-Tops)???  Also, they can easily make that rear window a power one (like the 4Runner).  The costs might go up a bit, but how much can these power windows really add to the bottom line?
