Rumor has it that Nissan is preparing a sporty successor to the 200SX, a car that will slot under the 350Z and may look like last year's Urge concept. Is this too many sports cars for Nissan?

No, not in my opinion.  Nissan is developing and upgrading its cars at a rate no one can match.  They've realized they need to upgrade their cars almost yearly and put out new models competitively with other manufacturers. They prove that being cash strapped at one time does not have any effect on their new products and the consumers agree hence Nissan is becoming an ever increasingly larger presence on the automotive scene.

A new 200SX would be an excellent choice.  The sport compact market is almost nil now and I'm sure Nissan has the expertise to sell lots of cars in this smaller segment. A company can't stop making a model because it sells in smaller numbers.  They need to energize the model with new upgrades and designs to keep it fresh. Never mind that more people opt for SUVs these days.  Niche cars like the 200SX or 350Z keep Nissan's brand as a desirable one..one that is talked about in automotive circles and then thru the general public who buys their cars.
Other companies drop their cars when sales slow instead of instigating a new design and mechanicals to keep the model selling (ie the popular Ford Probe..had they given it a new body and the new 3.5 V6, they could have had another shot at the sports compact market they gave up.)
