Some of the favorites I think should be included are: '63 Studebaker Avanti, Ferrari Lusso and Dino, Lamborghini Espada (one of the best looking of all 4 doors), Pierce Silver Arrow, and '67 Toyota 2000 GT.

I very rarely comment on others choices and by in large agree with most of your choices. I am an architectural design consultant and a beautiful automobile is so much more than a to b transit - it is a huge piece of functional sculpture. Would I make any changes to the list? Who wouldn't; however, let me complement you on your choices with some reservations. The Continental convertible could easily be replaced by the LIncoln Zypher and the Lincoln hardtop by the 1956 and 1957 Continental Mark II. The Studebaker although masterfully elegant in its day is still over shadowed by the 1963 Avanti. I also have a small stable of cars and am happy that I own several of your choices a 1967 E Type roadster and a 1965 Corvette coupe. My others that did not make the list are a 1972 DeTomaso Pantera, 1964 Porsche 904, 1986 Rinspeed Porsche 930 Slantnose Turbo, 1964 289 Cobra (slab side)and my every day driver a 1997 Jaguar XK8 coupe. I am currently looking for the right 1963 Avanti and a 1992 Nissan 300Z. Kudos for including the Buick Riviera and the Toronado. As for the Cadillac a 1957 or 1958 Eldorado Baritz convertible would have been my choice. But more importantly many thanks to your staff for putting together such a wonderful visual and thought provoking article.

How can you miss the Audi TT? It's a work of art. Enough said.

I happen to own a 300zx and all I get is looks. People slow down on thru-ways to yell to me and tell me they love my car. People always ask me questions about my car. They want to know what it is, when it came out, and where I got it from. Actually, anyone who owns a 300zx has this sort of thing happen to them all of the time. 300zx's are just timeless works of beauty. This car definite deserves to be in the top 25 most beautiful cars ever.

It's great to know that the staff at AUTOMOBILE magazine has such splendid taste to choose the Z32 (aka Fairlady 300zx). It was truly a car ahead of it's time in many areas. Lambo's are regarded as the exotic cream of the crop but has even incorporated the Z's headlights at one time! For a decade plus old vehicle; it can still hold her head up high to even the BEST cars produced today. The flowing lines are still quite modern and there are many examples of well maintained 300zx's STILL on the road; myself included. I've owned quite a few cars from high end German to Italian and the one car I keep coming back to is the Z32. So for those naysayers that has any misconception of this car...think again; the Z32 is alive and well...and do check the 300zx online poll for those that still dispute it's popularity.

The Chrysler 300 letter cars from 55 to 65, particularly the 1961 300 G should have been included. I have subscribed to Automobile Magazine since 1986 continuously and have enjoyed most issues. However, failing to include ANY Chrysler automobiles in your top 25 and including such atrocities as the 1946 Caddy and the 1966 Tornado (Plymouths and Dodges had slab sides in 62 and we are talking beautiful cars here) is a serious faux pau in my estimation.
Recognizing you have a right to your opinion I will be content to express my disappointment and continue to enjoy your fine magazine.

The 1957 Chevrolet BelAir 2 Door Hardtop would be my pick as the No.1 beautiful American car. I would like to upload a pic. of one if I could. Close behind that would be the 1957 Chevrolet Nomad. Thanks, DR.

Anyone who thinks the 300ZX Z32 does not belong in the 25 most beautiful cars, look at what was around in 1989 when it first came out.  Nothing could compare with it's beautiful looks, twin turbo power and handling, and price.  Even 17 years later, its design still looks fresh.  Everywhere I go with my 93Z, I get looks, questions of what it is, how beautiful it is, and thumbs up.  People ask me if I want to sell it.  I does turn heads.  There is nothing bland about it.

Others here in this thread comment why the 240Z is not included.  The 240Z was a landmark car, I owned a new 73.  But it was derived from multiple cars including a Jaguar nose.  Great looking, yes, beautiful, maybe not.  The second the Z32 came out in 1989, I immediately went to Nissan to buy one.  They offered so little for trade in on my 85 Z31 Turbo, I did not trade.  However, I waited and bought my 93 Z32 and kept my 85 Z31 and still have both to this day. 305K miles on the Z31, 113K miles on my Z32.  Strongest engines ever made.  The Z32 definitely belongs on the 25 most beautiful list.

Good list. I'd've found room for the BMW 507, 1949 Cadillac sedanet, Citroen tracton avant, Continental MkII, 1965 Corvair, 246 Dino and Jaguar XJS

where are the Ferrari Lusso, Lancia Aurelia Spider, Jaguar Mk II?  I could name many, many more - mostly Italian creations - the Mercedes 540 is impressive but not beautoful - e.g. contemporary Lancia Asturas by Pininfarina were.

What are the Nissan 300ZX and Continental doing here?  Yes, the Continental is distinctive and pretty diferent from mainsteam US design of the time but its hardly in the 'beautiful' category.  The original Corvair was not worse and many Rambler/AMC cars, including the first Javelin looked better in my opinion, but then who remembers them?

The original Jaguar xj6 was the beginning of a line that brought forth the xj6 series 3, which in my opinion is far more gracefull and eyecatching.

Please include the 1995-1999 Riviera. This was the first Riv I'd seen in years that was actually beautiful. Especially when viewed from the rear. A rolling work of art compared to all of the other American metal from those years. Ditto for the 95-99 Aurora. The second gen Aurora just didn't cut it.
